Hey everyone, I'm an English major in undergrad and I'd love some help explicating a piece as part of an assignment.

For my shakespeare course I need to respond to this quote as part of a term paper. I've followed along in class so I know the plays well enough, but I can't take a solid stance on this quote either way - we can choose to either refute, defend, or modify it in our thesis. I have plays and examples in mind to respond for each of the scenarios but I'm torn on which are the most solid... I'm basically just interested in how you understand the quote and if you have any suggestions on how to mold it. Thanks!

In “What is a Shakespearean Tragedy?” Tom McAlinden writes,

Shakespearean tragedy is centrally concerned with the destruction of human
greatness embodied in individuals endowed with ‘sovereignty of nature’ (Coriolanus
IV.7.35): men are instinctively referred to as ‘noble’ (in the moral or characterological
sense) by those who know them, even their enemies. However, what constitutes true nobility in action invariably proves problematic for the hero, especially when he becomes
entangled in the ethical contradictions associated with the notion of ‘honour’ . . . .
The hero’s fall involves a self-betrayal or loss of identity which constitutes a breakdown in the balance of a richly endowed nature, one in which feeling is so powerful that it is never far from the point of destructive excess. It is this nature which gives rise to the notion that what makes the tragic protagonists great is also what destroys them . . . .

Hey all!

Next month, lots of people of many different religions and non-religions will be celebrating a season of giving. And since so many of us are close here, and many people have suggested this to me over the years, I thought I'd help us coordinate something a little special here for us.

This year, we'll be spreading the love with out first-ever Holiday Flames!

Here's the scoop:

1. Sign up in the poll below and fill out all requested information.
2. In a week, everyone will receive TWO addresses, and accompanying information.
3. Send a gift of your choice to each address. Spend no more than a total of $20 USD on each gift, postage included. ( Click here to convert your currency )
4. If all goes well, you should receive two gifts by mid-December from two randomly-selected Flame members!
5. In the last week of December, I'll post a public "Thank You" post for people who want to send a thank you shout out to their anonymous and not-so-anonymous gifters!

Join in with us! Just fill this out if you'd like to participate:

(Only I will be able to see the results of this poll, so don't worry about sharing your info. You have to be a member of the community to participate, but feel free to join just long enough to fill out this poll.)

Poll #1485831 Holiday Flames Participation Form
Open to: Friends, detailed results viewable to: None, participants: 14

What mailing address should I share with your gifter? (P.O. boxes OK)

What name/username should I say is receiving the gift? (Anonymous is just fine, too, if you don't want to share your name)

Is there anything in particular you do NOT want, are allergic to, or cannot enjoy?

What gender are you? (Feel free to skip this one if you want)

Anything else we should know? (Feel free to leave this blank if you're all set.)

I'll close this poll at 12pm EST on Sunday, November 22.

Thanks, guys! <3

Hey all!

I'm not including a paragraph with this week's topic. I like the idea of leaving this one "old school", which is the way we used to post them, because it's the kind of topic I feel would be cheapened by anything else.

*** New Members: Welcome! Check out the Main Contest Rules for info and guidelines on how to play! We're in the middle of our monthly contest right now, but you're always welcome to play just for fun this month and join in the heavy hitting next month!***

Anyone have accounts on either of those? I just opened a Twitter account, just for the hell of it. Aside from the fact that I can now follow two three of my favorite authors I don't really see the appeal of it. Facebook is far more entertaining.

But hey, if anyone has a Twitter account, lemme know and I'll follow.

Twitter: http://twitter.com/CynicalDaydream

Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#/profile.php?ref=profile&id=100000159336607

Add me!

And on a completely random note, my neck is cold. I just got my hair cut (and highlighted) the other day, and it is SHORT in the back. Like, off-the-neck short. It looks great, but the back of my neck is always so cold now. I think I'll be investing in scarves for a few months. XD

It's done!

We had enough editors, with about 10-15 extra edits flex room and a couple standby editors of we'd needed them. We're doing OK, peeps. :-)

Notice that in this version of the chart the links are black-- you can still click on them, but they're more readable now. This was pipi's idea, and a fantastic one. Also- jsut so you all know, pipi does about half of the work for the editing chart every week, which is why I'm able to post it so much earlier than usual. THANK YOU, PIPI!

No one has more than four edits this week, although I had to stretch things out a bit. [info]rephen, since you seem to be done with your shenganigans, I've added you back on the editing list. :-) Let me know if that's not ok!

Hey all!

Just getting organized for the weekly editing post.

Status Report:

This week, from what I understand, we lost the following editors, who missed two weeks of edits in a row, or at least didn't check them off:

[info]asianprincess61, although I think I'm forgetting something here.
[info]caterpillar, although again, I think I'm forgetting something.
[info]chaos_ride
[info]lorlele

Let me know if I made a mistake or if you're still interested! :-)

I have eight editors on hiatus, mostly for NaNO. 13 Editors are catching up for various reasons, 9 of which didn't do their edits from last week. This, combined with the makeup editors from the editors we lost, means that we're very tight this week. I'm hoping that we have enough for everyone to have two edits, but I can't promise anything right now. I'll do my absolute best for ya'all. :-)

Editors- THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO! :-) You make a huge difference!

Can anyone recommend a local seamstress for a simple job?

I'd like to replace all my cheesy white mini blinds with curtains, but I plan on just going thrifting for whatever I can find that looks nice and depending on what I come across, I'll need some panels resized or may need curtains made from scratch out of fabric. Even if I miraculously find all the right sized stuff I need, I already have a set in my living room that is way too long and needs trimming.

I'm sure it'll be a super easy task, but I am not stitch-inclined, nor do I own a sewing machine. It's simple enough that even if I can just find someone crafty on here who likes to sew, I wouldn't mind paying a reasonable amount to have it done.

I live in East Nashville, but driving isn't a big deal, providing its not way out in the boonies or something.

Thanks in advance!

I really need to talk to someone who is at the level of around 4th year or masters or higher. I'm having trouble getting back into grad studies. My brain isn't on the right track right now and I'm not asking the right questions or having that sense of what a good thesis is.

I have to do a research paper. I don't even really remember what a research paper is with respect to other kinds of papers and my prof isn't being very much help. I'd like to bounce a few ideas off of someone who knows wtf they're doing and get suggestions on what to modify.

I'm not looking for people telling me things to look up or giving me specifics. Nor am I looking for someone to read a paper (paper's not written yet). I want to email people some ideas and then have them say things like "that's a good idea, but that's not a thesis" or "great, but what is your point?" only I'm already asking myself these questions. I need people to ask me the questions I'm not thinking of.

I also need to put together the framework of this paper in the next 2 days before I visit my prof on Monday, because when I visit him, I'm going to give him the outline of what I'm doing and then find out if I should be dropping the course (voluntary withdrawal date is Nov 18). So not only do I need someone to bounce ideas off of, I need them fast.

Anyone willing to lend me a hand?

My email is dreaded.night.turtle@gmail.com

Dogs are wonderful companions for people! This is no exception for the
members of the Guide Dog Handlers All Ways, an alumni chapter of Guide Dogs
for the Blind, made up of blind people who travel with their guide dogs, but
who also have secondary disabilities, and deal with their inconveniences. On
November 14, 2009, from 8:00 a.m. eastern to 8:00 p.m. eastern chapter members will be holding a blog-a-thon on their web
site:

http://community.livejournal.com/gdhaw

The purpose of the blog-a-thon is to raise money for Guide Dogs for the
Blind, to continue the work of helping dogs prepare to become guide dogs.
The chapter members will be sharing stories about their lives, their dogs,
funny experiences, training tips, and how their dogs have so completely
enhanced their lives. Please support Guide Dogs for the Blind by stopping by
the GDHAW Alumni chapter blog web site to read the members' stories and then
follow the links to make a donation to Guide Dogs.

The members of GDHAW look forward to having you read our stories and hope
you will come back and visit us often. We appreciate your comments and
participation. Please feel free to pass this announcement along to anyone
you know who would like to support Guide Dogs, or who might benefit from
information about working with a guide dog as a person with multiple
disabilities.

FYI, I spun by to check out the new HH Gregg grand opening sale, what I found

Fridge I bought 7/1/2005 for 588.01 (+ 50 dollar delivery - 638.01 after taxes) now at the new HH Gregg location on sale for 680 + 69.99 dollar delivery (818.99 after taxes). As of a year and a half ago HH Gregg jacked up the delivery prices from 50 to 69.99 as a fuel surcharge and never lowered 'em down.

That's a savings of -$181

Although to be fair, the fridge I bought had different handles, and that was a 2005 model and this was a 2009 of the same brand / size / etc. so this comparison isn't perfect.
